The adjustment officers

The director uses lighting and dialogue in this scene to develop the idea that these characters, while human, are completely different to us. In this scene, the adjustment officers are walking in perfect uniform on the top of a building and give the idea that a big event is about to happen. This is a very short scene but has major importance in the movie hinting towards the idea that they are different to us in many ways. The lighting in this scene, very grey and not showing much color, show the audience how plain these characters are. the characters give a very professional vibe and apparently do not show emotion. The dialogue in this scene presents the fact that the adjustment officers are different from us when the leader states, “everyone needs a vacation, even us.” the dialogue is also very monotone while also purposeful, adding to the idea of difference and professionalism. These two film techniques work well together to show these characters as almost robot-like with no ear for anything outside of their ‘plan’ The director wants the audience to understand that these characters are plain at this point because he wants us to sympathize with David in the final chase.
